Paper or Plastic: Neither

There is one habit that we all can change today that will make an impact on the environment and that is paper bags and plastic bags/bottles consumption. I think most of us are not truly aware of the devastating effects of these items.

When I was in high school I did a project in my Marketing class about creating and selling a fake reusable bag brand. While I was doing research I was shocked at all the info and facts. for example, which bag do you think would be the most “eco friendly choice”, paper or plastic?

Well plastic bag production creates less waste than paper. However, plastic bags remain with us for a long, long time. Paper bags waste a lot of water but plastic bags waste a lot of electricity. The answer? NEITHER! You can read more about the breakdown on Tree Hugger.

Our current consumption:

In the Us alone we use over 14,000,000,000(4) plastic bags are used per year and only 1% of plastic bags are returned for recycling (3). The worldwide consumption is at a mind blowing 4,000,000,000,000(3). Just one of those plastic bags is estimated to take 1,000 years to biodegrade in a landfill.

Other Key Issues:

  1. Waste of our Precious Resources:
    • 14,000,000 trees cut down for paper bag consumption in the US each year(5)
    • 12,000,000 barrels of oil required for US annual plastic bag consumption(6)
    • Consider the energy, water and waste emissions to produce plastic and paper bags (ratio of 1 part pulp to 400 parts water to make paper bags)
  2. Damaging Wildlife:plasticbagPlastic bags kill an estimated 100,000(1) marine animals each year and the average number of pieces of plastic in each square mile of ocean 46,000(2)! I love my beaches here in cali and the beautiful marine life that lives in it.

What Can you do?

reusable bags

  • Use a cloth bag and save 6 six bags a week. That’s 22,176 bags in your lifetime. Ask a friend to do the same and that number doubles. Ask another friend and it triples. You get the idea.
  • Trader Joe’s has a very durable canvas bag that I own a couple of. They are better in me option to carry groceries in anyways! I job that would taken 3-4 plastic bags fits in my large canvas bag. Whole Foods also has some different size options to fit everyones needs (some of my bags pictured above)
  • If you are shopping at the mall, bring a bag or purchase a reusable bag at the cashier.
  • if you must buy a bag, recycle or repurpose
  • When a cashier offers you a bag for something you can carry or stick in your purse decline and save the bag!
  • From an energy standpoint, according to this Australian study, canvas bags are 14 times better than plastic bags and 39 times better than paper bags, assuming that canvas bags get a good workout and are used 500 times during their life cycle

Workout Gear: Style without breaking the bank

Losing weight can be exciting but workout clothes expensive when it comes to buying clothes every time you drop some lbs. Personally, I think feeling confident while working out is key and what you are wearing can play a part in that. If you are constantly pulling up your pants while working out it can be distracting and if you feel frumpy in baggy tees you wont feel like the gym warrior you really are! I have put together a couple places that wont break you bank, but will keep your workout outfits on point!

I haven’t purchased anything from Old Navy in  LONG time but my mom told me about a sale they were having a few weeks ago and I got a killer deal on some workout gear!

Amazing Exfoliating Treatment: Exfolikate

I went into Sephora a few weeks ago looking for a product to help clear out some blackheads and congestion I had in my skin around my cheekbones and chin. The lady helping me swore by the ExfoliKate® Intensive Exfoliating Treatment. Let me first tell you i grew up with my mom being  an esthetician and I worked at a dayspa for 4 years so I have been exposed to A LOT of products! Needless to say I am very picky when it comes to my products!

image-4

I am in love with enzymes (as long as its strong and real) because they eat away at dead skin so effectively! My mom used to give my pumpkin/papaya enzyme masks so I have been on the hunt for an at home remedy! I was extremely excited to try this because it has Papaya, Pineapple, and Pumpkin Enzymes! It also has one of my other favorite exfoliation ingredients, Lactic Acid. I purchased the smallest size which is .5oz to start off with which retails at $24 at Sephora.

Skin type is it good for:
✔ Normal

Overall Rating:  5 of 5

Application: When you use ExfoliKate in the shower, the steam will help to activate the enzymes, making it even more effective.

Per Sephora’s Website- Suggested Usage:
-Use once or twice a week, AM or PM.
-Apply a thin, even layer to a clean, wet face, massaging in a circular motion for 30 seconds.
-Leave on for up to two minutes.

Precautions:
-This product may cause the skin to tingle and flush slightly for a short time.
-For sensitive skin, leave on for less than one minute, or use ExfoliKate® Gentle instead

Overall this is a great product and I am extremely satisfied with the results! I would recommend if you have clogged pores, mila, or blackheads to give this a try ASAP! Things I did good:

  1. Overcame my ankle injury during workouts
  2. Meal prep
  3. Packing my gym bag ahead of time

Run on a Mission

Last Saturday I took a trip down to San Diego to visit my sister. I decided it was the perfect place to do the virtual 5k I signed up for with Run on a Mission. This race was for Thyroid Cancer Awarness so I was extremely excited to participate! One of the founders has a daughter who was diagnosed at 13 years old and is just starting her journey without her thyroid!

One of my personal goals is to become a stronger runner, which hasn’t been easy. I liked this race because you could do it at your own pace anytime, anywhere during the time frame.

I received this beautiful medal and a T-shirt for participation with my donation!

The race was only funded at 23% when I signed up so I did whatever I could to help spread awarness! As of today the race is at 352.50% funded and a total of  $3,525!

I did my race along the ocean on the beach and trails! I am so happy it was such a beautiful day outside

After taking pics in action I now have a new founded respect for fitness and apparel models!
I have another race coming up next weekend for StandUp2Cancer and I am excited to participate! Thank you again Run on a Mission for letting me be a part of your race!

MEAL PREP: The Basic Survival Guide

MEAL PREP! Seems like everyone is doing it right? Well thats because it saves you money, its healthier than eating out, and helps you be more in control of you fitness plan.

Yes might say “well I don’t have time for meal prep”. Trust me when I say once you get the hang of it its quick and you will wonder why you didn’t start prepping sooner.

Average cost of 1 meal at a “heathy” restaurant is around $10.50 and if you multiply that by the number of times you eat out in a week its easily around $130! Depending on the meat and veggies I get, meal prepping from me brings my cost down to around 75$ a week.

The Grocery Store Visit:

Image.jpg

Step 1: MAKE A LIST- Always make a list of what you want before you visit and how many meals you will need to purchase for.
Step2: SHOP-

  • Veggies– Meal (broccoli, asparagus, spinach, brussel sprouts, etc.)
*Tip: start with only 1-2 veggies
  • Other Produce– these will be what helps add flavor(shallots, onion, garlic,                                                                parsley, basil etc.)
  • Meat– Think lean and healthy ( ground turkey, chicken, tilapia, tuna, and salmon (in moderation)
    • I am really picky about my meats and I order from Meats2U who cuts down to meat prep work for you plus their meats taste amazing and are cost effective!
  • Carb- Complex and NO white ( brown rice, quinoa, oats, sweet potato/yams)
  • Accessories and other:
    • Seasonings – make sure you have plenty of variety and low in sodium!
    • Favor God Seasonings are on my Wish List compare.jpg
    • Foil – this will minimize cleanup 200%
    • Spray olive oil
    • Baking sheets, pans, and utensils
    • Tupperware- INVEST! You need to have 1 container per meal you are prepping. I would recommend starting off with ones without the dividers to allow more versatility. Make sure to get quality and microwave/dishwasher safe! Here are some of my favorites:

Six Pack Bags Meal Prep Containers

IKEA: I use these the most and phased out most of my plastic containers because I do not like to reheat plastic!

Time to Prep:

  • Preheat oven for meat
  • Season you meats and place on a lightly oiled pan covered in foil (leave enough to wrap around meat to keep moist.
  • While the meat is cooking wash start to boil water for rice or quinoa
  • Veggies:
    1. Roasting : Wash your veggies, cut and place in foil to be put in oven
    2. Sauté: tiny bit of oil and toss your veggies in seasoning
    3. Microwave bags- the easiest route
  • the last 10-15 min of your meat cooking in oven, add your veggie
  • While every thing is finishing cooking/cooling down, get out your containers.
  • Fill containers
    1. Portion your meats  ( I weigh mine and Im currently eating 4oz)
    2. Measure out out carbs
    3. Add veggies -lots of them!11327991_396191560573018_2057006048_n
  • YOU ARE DONE!

Pack:

This part it took me a while to figure out what to use. The best containers I have found are the 6 Pack Bags  which I posted about  before.

The ice packs stay cool all day long, have so many compartments, and are durable! I own two of them right now and I love them!!

The pink one is the Innovator 300 and hold 4 water bottles, 3 meals plus an extra Tupperware container the Black one is the Innovator Mini which is smaller and holds 3 smaller meals and 2 water bottles.  They both come with 3 containers plus a vitamin pack container!

I like these because I am in sales andI do not have an office to put food in the fridge so I need to keep my meals cool while in the car. Plus whenever I travel i can bring all my food more the weekend.

Keep your Keurig clean!

My Keurig is the giver of life in morning! Keeping it clean and running is super important so how do you keep a Keurig clean!?

Check out this video from “Clean My Space”

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZP69ATh8rRg
Details from the video:

Three quick maintenance things you should know:

  1. If you are going away for over a week, don’t leave water in the reservoir. It’ll evaporate and leave the mineral deposits behind that clog the system.
  2. If you brew something sticky like a hot chocolate or iced tea, run a cleansing brew of just water and no K Cup through after you’ve made your drink. This will rinse out any sugar crystals that would otherwise be cakey or create a blockage.
  3. Use distilled water – they suggest this because regular tap water has calcium or other minerals that can leave deposits in the reservoir and machine over time. The deposits clog the heating coils and that means your machine has to work harder, longer and use more energy. If you don’t use distilled water you will have to clean it more often to keep it going strong.
